Flood Warning & Shoreline Hazard - Update May 1, 2026
The Township of Ramara is advising residents that multiple flood-related alerts currently remain in effect across the region:
- The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (Aurora Midhurst Owen Sound District) has extended the Flood Warning for the district until Friday, May 8, 2026.
- The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority has issued a Shoreline Hazard Watch – HIGH Risk for the Lake Simcoe watershed, in effect until May 22, 2026.
These notices apply to areas including Ramara, Severn, Tiny, and Tay, as well as the Severn and Black Rivers (including Washago), Sparrow Lake, Lake St. John, and the Lake Simcoe shoreline.
Current Conditions
Higher than normal water levels and flow conditions continue across the region due to recent rainfall and ongoing runoff. Lake Simcoe water levels are currently approximately 30 cm above average for this time of year and are expected to remain elevated in the coming weeks.
Shoreline flooding is occurring in low-lying areas along Lake Simcoe. Continued rainfall and strong winds are increasing wave action, which may result in localized storm surge (seiche) effects and additional shoreline impacts.
River flows, particularly along the Severn River system, remain elevated. While some water levels are beginning to recede, they are expected to remain higher than normal as water continues to move through the watershed.
Potential Impacts:
- Flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas
- Ongoing shoreline flooding and wave action along Lake Simcoe
- Potential for localized storm surge/seiche effects
- Elevated water levels and fast-flowing rivers and streams
- Increased risk of dike overtopping or failure in vulnerable areas
- Impacts to properties near watercourses and shorelines
Safety and Preparedness:
Residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution around all waterbodies:
- Stay well back from shorelines, rivers, and fast-moving water
- Keep children and pets away from waterways
- Be aware of unstable banks and rapidly changing conditions
- Be prepared for localized flooding and take steps to protect property
Residents in historically flood-prone areas should continue to monitor conditions closely and take necessary precautions to secure vulnerable property.
Sandbags Available:
Township crews are actively monitoring conditions and addressing issues where possible. The Township is providing sand and sandbags at the following locations:
- Brechin Ball Diamond – 3219 Ramara Rd. 47
- Yard 3 – 7305 County Rd. 169
- Bluebird Park – 6316 Bluebird St.
- Udney Community Centre – 2347 Concession Rd. 10
Please note sandbags are no longer available at the Longford Mills Community Centre.
Residents must bring their own shovel and be prepared to fill bags and load them into their vehicle.
The Township recognizes the challenges and stress that flooding can bring to residents, particularly those in low-lying or waterfront areas. Community members are encouraged to continue taking precautions, check in on neighbours who may need assistance, and follow all safety guidance when dealing with flood-affected areas.
Flood Safety Reminders:
- If your home has experienced flooding, avoid entering areas where water may be in contact with electrical outlets, appliances, or panels
- Do not enter a flooded basement if electricity may still be on
- Contact your utility provider if you need to safely disconnect power or gas
- Protect your well from flood water
- Wear appropriate protective gear (gloves, boots) during cleanup
