Lagoon City Canal Maintenance Update – June 12, 2026
The Township of Ramara would like to provide residents with an update regarding aquatic weed management activities within Lagoon City's municipally owned canal and lagoon system.
As part of an internal review of operational practices, Township staff have been working with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to ensure aquatic weed management activities continue to support navigable waterways while protecting fish habitat and the broader aquatic ecosystem.
Through these discussions, the Township recently received confirmation that approvals from the DFO are required for aquatic weed skimming and harvesting activities moving forward. Staff are proactively working with the DFO to better understand how these requirements apply to Lagoon City's unique waterway system and to complete the necessary approval process.
The Township anticipates beginning mechanical aquatic weed management activities in the coming weeks once the required approvals are in place.
In the meantime, other components of the Township's canal maintenance program continue to move forward, including the operation of bubbler systems and the installation of water movers.
The Township recognizes that increased vegetation may affect navigation and the appearance of some canal areas and we appreciate residents’ patience. While current conditions may not be ideal, protecting fish habitat and supporting the long-term health of the aquatic ecosystem remain important priorities.
The Township will provide further updates on the approval process and the anticipated start date for aquatic weed harvesting as information becomes available.
