Statement from Mayor Basil Clarke re: Flood Conditions in Ramara
Ramara, Ont. / April 19, 2026 – The following statement has been issued by Mayor Basil Clarke:
“The Township of Ramara continues to closely monitor elevated water levels and localized flooding impacts across our community. Water levels in many areas are beginning to stabilize and are anticipated to gradually recede; however, levels in Lake St. John are expected to continue to rise over the next few days.
We recognize that residents along the waterways within the Township have questions and concerns regarding sandbags and flood mitigation measures, and these concerns are being taken seriously. We understand the stress these conditions are placing on our community and I want to assure residents that Township staff and Council have been actively engaged, both in the field and behind the scenes throughout this spring season.
Discussions have been taking place throughout the weekend and the Township’s Community Control Group has met to review current conditions and response efforts. At this time, the Township is not at the threshold required to declare a State of Emergency. This threshold is based on specific criteria, including risk to life, impacts to the operational capacity of critical infrastructure, and the Township’s capacity to respond using available resources. Council direction established in 2016 that municipal sandbag distribution is only activated in the event a State of Emergency is declared.
I have called a Special Meeting of Council for Monday, April 20, 2026, at 1 p.m. regarding the provision of sandbags in accordance with the Township’s Procedure By-law that requires a minimum of 24-hours' notice. This meeting will be held electronically only and may be livestreamed on the Township’s YouTube channel.
Township operations crews remain on patrol across Ramara and have been working throughout the weekend to maintain safe and passable municipal roadways. The Township would like to thank Amrize (Lafarge) for their support and donation of gravel to assist with maintaining access on affected roads.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed, take appropriate precautions to protect their property, and continue looking out for one another.
Further communications and updates will be provided following the Special Meeting of Council. For the latest updates and road impacts, please visit the Township’s website at ramara.ca/news.
Ramara is a strong and supportive community, and I encourage residents to check in on neighbours in flood-prone areas, particularly seniors or those who may need assistance. Small acts of support can make a meaningful difference during situations like this.” – Basil Clarke, Mayor.
