Reduced Load Restrictions

Half Loads Sign

Each year, from early March to May, the Township of Ramara enforces seasonal load restrictions — commonly referred to as "half-load" limits — on most municipal roadways. These restrictions are essential for protecting our roads during the vulnerable spring thaw period.

Beginning in late winter, Township staff closely monitor thaw conditions through regular patrol inspections, temperature, and weather data analysis.

Due to the unpredictable nature of spring thaw progression, load restrictions may be implemented with only a few days notice. Once the pavement strength has been restored, the load restrictions are removed.

Why are Load Restrictions Put In Place?

The purpose of implementing load restrictions is to protect the road and road base from damage caused by heavy loads. During the spring, as frost melts and moisture seeps into the roadbed, roads become softer and weaker, making them vulnerable to permanent damage from heavy vehicle wheel loads. By temporarily limiting load weights, it helps preserve infrastructure, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the life of Township roads.

Half load restrictions are established by Bylaw 2003.08. Please note that any person who contravenes Bylaw 2003.08 is guilty of an offence and upon conviction is liable to a fine or penalty.
