Septic Systems
Many residents of Ramara rely on septic systems to manage their household wastewater. Privately owned septic tank systems must be installed and maintained in accordance with the Ontario Building Code.
Septic Permits
Septic (sewage) systems under 10,000 litres per day are regulated by the Ontario Building Code. Any work done to, or that could affect, the septic system requires a permit.
A permit is required for any installation or alteration to a septic system on your property, including under the following conditions:
- New house is being constructed
-
Proposed alteration that will affect the capacity of an existing system
-
Change of use that increases the flow of the building
-
Relocating a septic system
-
Installation, repair, or addition of a sewage holding tank
-
The septic system is failing
- Site grading or alterations in the vicinity of the septic system
Apply for a Septic Permit
Applying for a septic permit is similar to an application for a building permit to construct a sewage system. Please visit the Building Permits page for more information on how to apply for a septic permit.
On-Site Sewage (Septic) Reinspection Program
The On-Site Sewage System Maintenance Inspection Program was established in 2011 by the Province of Ontario to help preserve and protect surface water and groundwater quality. The program is outlined in the Ontario Building Code and supports the Clean Water Act, 2006 and the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan.
