Drinking Water Source Protection
Ramara belongs to the South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Region – one of 19 regions in Ontario.
Source Water Protection is a provincial program to protect municipal drinking water sources from contamination and overuse.
Source Water Protection Plan
The source protection plan is a list of policies and programs to protect current and future sources of municipal drinking water. The source protection plan for the region including the Township of Ramara took effect on July 1, 2015.
Source water is untreated water from streams, lakes, rivers or underground aquifers that people use for potable water supply.
Source Water Protection Resident Impacts
Source water protection primarily impacts people who live or own property or a business within vulnerable areas near a municipal drinking water source.
To find out if your property is in a vulnerable area use the Source Water Protection Information Atlas. You can also contact the Township's Risk Management Official at extension 285.
Private Wells Are the Owner's Responsibility
The measures put in place to protect municipal drinking water supplies do not include private drinking water wells. Private well owners still need to be regularly testing their water and maintaining their wells.
If you have any health concerns about your well water, contact your local district health unit.
