Any resident or property owner can submit a request for review.
Traffic Calming
Improving Safety on Township Roads
The Township’s Traffic Calming Program helps address concerns about speeding and roadway safety in a fair, consistent way.
How the Program Works
Traffic calming requests are reviewed using a consistent, data-driven process that considers factors such as:
- Vehicle speeds
- Traffic volumes
- Road classification
- Presence of pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby land uses (schools, parks, etc.)
If a location meets the criteria, staff may recommend appropriate measures such as signage, speed feedback devices, pavement markings, or physical traffic calming features where suitable.
Requesting Traffic Calming Measures
Residents who have concerns about speeding or traffic safety can submit a request for review. All requests are assessed against the program criteria to ensure fairness and consistency across the Township.
Requests may be submitted through the Township’s Traffic Calming Request Form.
Requesting Caution Signage
If you would like to see additional signage on your street, such as children at play, wildlife present, turtles crossing etc. you may submit a request form for staff review.
Next Steps After Review
- Staff will collect and review relevant traffic data
- The location will be evaluated against established thresholds
- Recommendations will be made to Council where applicable
- Approved measures will be scheduled and implemented based on priority and available resources
Who can request traffic calming?
Can traffic calming be installed anywhere?
No. Measures must meet program criteria and be suitable for the road type and conditions.
How long does the process take?
Timeframes vary depending on data collection, site conditions, and prioritization.
Why wasn’t traffic calming approved in my area?
Not all locations meet the thresholds required. Decisions are based on data, not just perception.
What if my request doesn’t meet the criteria?
Staff may still recommend other solutions (e.g., signage, enforcement coordination, or monitoring).
Can I get updates on my request?
Yes. Staff will follow up once the review is complete and recommendations are made.
Is speeding enforcement part of this program?
Enforcement is separate and handled by the Ontario Provincial Police, Orillia Detachment.
