A picture of firefighter coats hanging up against a wall

Ramara/November 12, 2024 - The Township of Ramara has made significant strides in acknowledging the contributions of its volunteer firefighters by offering them the opportunity to enroll in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) Pension Plan.

“Earlier this year, the Council collectively decided to provide our outstanding volunteer firefighters the option to enroll in OMERS as Non-Full Time (NFT) staff. Given the time commitment, long hours, and challenging situations our volunteer firefighters face, we want them to know that their efforts are recognized, and they deserve peace of mind for their retirement.”

~ Basil Clarke, Mayor

OMERS expanded eligibility for Non-Full Time (NFT) staff last year; however, it was only this year that the Township learned it could extend this benefit to volunteer firefighters.

“I am incredibly pleased with the foresight of our Council and CAO to show remarkable support for the firefighters who serve this community. This benefit sends a strong message to our members that we care about them, their families, and their future. It is a well-deserved acknowledgment of their service, and it also serves as an excellent tool for attracting and retaining volunteer firefighters. In a society where the face of volunteerism has changed drastically, we need more incentives to encourage participation.”

~ Tony Stong, Fire Chief

The Township of Ramara operates three fire stations with approximately 90 volunteer firefighters who respond to around 450 calls per year, covering fire, medical, rescue, and specialty services. Ramara Fire and Rescue Services is also committed to prevention, education, training, and emergency response.

“Eighty percent of fire departments in Ontario are volunteer or composite, and the communities they serve rely on them for protection. We need every resource available to encourage our citizens to embrace volunteerism and support their local communities. This is easier said than done, especially given the current socioeconomic climate. By introducing this program, we hope to alleviate some pressures on families and provide comfort in knowing that our municipality supports their futures.”

~Tony Stong, Fire Chief

Ramara Fire and Rescue Services recently closed applications for new volunteer firefighters. Due to an overwhelming response from applicants, the Fire Service is hoping to begin the interview and onboarding process over the next six months.
